Striking of a lamp (10) is controlled by using a resonant capacitor (8) and inductor (7) to multiply a stimulating voltage. Coupled in series between positive and negative rails (2,3) of the voltage supply is a first pair of diodes (13,14) defining a first node between them. Similarly coupled in series between the positive and negative rails (2,3) is a second pair of diodes (13,14) defining a second node between them. The resonant inductor (7) has a secondary winding (7A), which is coupled between the first and second nodes. If the lamp striking voltage exceeds a threshold, a voltage will be induced in the secondary winding (7A) that is sufficient to forward bias the diodes (13,14; 13',14') of one pair and return the excess energy to the rails (2,3).
