PURPOSE: A fast multiple reference frame selection method using neighboring motion vectors and inter-mode correlation is provided to reduce the unnecessary calculation by using the statistical features of local motion vectors and the blocks adjacent to an encoding block. CONSTITUTION: A fast multiple reference frame selection method using neighboring motion vectors and inter-mode correlation comprises the steps of: determining an adjacent block for each mode(S100); calculating the search region size of the determined adjacent block(S200); calculating the size of a motion vector and the correlation of the adjacent region(S300); and comparing the direction and size of the motion vector of the adjacent block to determine the search region as one of the search region which reflects a local statistical feature(S400).
