The apparatus comprises a non-linear resistor (1) formed as a column of varistors, enclosed in an insulating housing. Resistor (1) is fixed on the plate (2) with overhead intermediate support bracket (3). The spark gap (4) is formed between the wire (5) overhead and the discharge electrode (7) on the bottom (8) of the resistor (1). The electrode (7) is formed as a metallic torus elongated in a direction perpendicular to the wire (5). The dimensions of the spark gap (4), the electrode (7) and the electrical parameters of the nonlinear resistor jointly satisfy the relations given in the description.
