The device i.e. pipe bending machine, has an overhung winding spindle (24) rotatable around a longitudinal axis (23). A feeding equipment (2) continuously feeds a workpiece (6) to the spindle. A device produces a relative movement between the feeding device and the spindle in a direction of a longitudinal axis of the spindle. A clamping element (27) with clamping jaws (39) is fixed to a holder (26) at a free end of the spindle. Actuating units are provided within the spindle for transferring the element from a normal position into a clamping position and vice versa.
