The method involves detecting light reflected by a surface of a road (5) towards a camera (2) when viewed from the top. A picture frame is determined corresponding to image point screening of a digital image sensor of the camera. An illumination intensity field reflected by the road towards the camera is determined. A head lamp (1) and the camera are moved relative to each other along a radiation axis (A) of the head lamp. An illumination region (3) detected by the camera is measured and combined in an entire image of the light density field of the head lamp. An independent claim is also included for a device for recording a light density field of a head lamp of a vehicle.
