The method involves determining and evaluating a driving state variable of a vehicle, where the driving state variable characterizes behavior of a driver. A defined driving condition is identified, and the evaluation of the driving state variable is accomplished during the defined driving condition. The driving conditions are selected for determination and evaluation of the driving state variable. The evaluation is accomplished during braking or acceleration processes, change in steering angle, start-up and/or driving-off of motorways and/or turning manoeuvres and traveling straight ahead. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle component comprising a regulating and/or a control device.
