The method involves quantitatively evaluating deviation of an actual value of nitrogen oxide-mass flow rate from a reference value of the nitrogen oxide-mass flow rate. The actual value is detected by a nitrogen oxide sensor, where the actual value is close to the reference value based on the result of the quantitative evaluation. An actual value of dosage amount to a reducing agent is differentiated from reference value of the dosage amount. A long-term adaptation factor is determined based on the deviation between the actual and reference values of the dosage amount.
