The method involves measuring nitrogen oxide concentration in exhaust gas by a nitrogen oxide sensor that is arranged before an exhaust gas purification catalyst in exhaust gas flow direction. A target value of nitrogen oxide concentration is determined using an engine characteristic map in dependence upon an engine load and engine speed by the sensor. An internal combustion engine is regulated to the target value by the sensor by adjusting exhaust gas recirculation and fuel injection. An independent claim is also included for an engine control unit with an input for connection to a nitrogen oxide sensor.
