The device (32) has a shift lever (2) coupled with a shift element (3) i.e. sliding collar, of a manual gearbox (1) by a mechanical effective connection (33). The mechanical effective connection comprises an operating tolerance in a shifting state in which the shift element is adjusted around a coupled shift element path (X). Additional adjustment of the shift element takes place around an automatic shift element path (Y) so as to obtain an end position of the shift element, where the end position is assigned to an inserted gear.
