The method involves reducing file name lengths of files for optimized handling of the files in play-lists. A part of a file name is cut before storing the files in a memory and overlapped to a preset length of the file name. A checksum e.g. cross sum and hash total, is formed from content of redundant number of points with respect to the cut part of the file name, and added to the file name that is reduced around the cut part. The checksum is written as a non-visible part of the file name. The file names with the cut file names are analyzed in a portable device e.g. DVD player. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product including programs for executing a method for analyzing a file name (2) a computer-readable data structure produced by a method for analyzing a file name (3) a device for executing a method for analyzing a file name.
