The method involves monitoring a set of images, each comprising a set of pixels, and utilizing texture-less processing scheme to analyze the images. The images are filtered to separate portions of images indicating a clear surface upon which a potential road surface is estimated from other portions of the images that do not indicate a potential road surface. A clear path is determined based on the clear surface, and the image is filtered by filtering an area below a horizon line on the image from an area above the horizon line. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for detecting a clear path of travel for a vehicle by analyzing a set of images generated by a camera device located upon the vehicle.
