Synthesizing carbonate, thiocarbonate and/or urethane, comprises (a) carrying out a base-catalyzed Michael addition of a monosubstituted carbonic acid ester anions, thiocarbonic acid ester anions or a carbamic acid anions with a Michael acceptor. An independent claim is also included for synthesizing dimethyl carbonate, comprising carrying out at least one of the step from (a), (ai) preparing the monosubstituted carbonic acid ester anion, thiocarbonic acid ester anion or a carbamic acid anion by (optionally base-catalyzed) reaction of an amine or an alkoxide/phenoxide with carbon dioxide, or preparing a monosubstituted carbonic acid ester anion by (optionally base-catalyzed) reaction of Michael acceptor with carbon dioxide, and (b) carrying out transesterification or transamidation of carbonate, thiocarbonate or urethane produced in the step (a).
