The method for automatically operating a reactor (1) for softening the water, comprises mixing lime milk and raw water with one another, where a granular solid is present in the raw water, dispersing the granular solid to a fluidized bed by the water pressure, where the lime deposits itself on the granular solids to develop larger growing lime pellets, which are removed while exceeds a predetermined size, continually recording a measuring value relevant for the size of the lime pellets, and introducing a deduction of the lime pellets over a deduction device. The method for automatically operating a reactor (1) for softening the water, comprises mixing lime milk and raw water with one another, where a granular solid is present in the raw water, dispersing the granular solid to a fluidized bed by the water pressure, where the lime deposits itself on the granular solids to develop larger growing lime pellets, which are removed while exceeds a predetermined size, continually recording a measuring value relevant for the size of the lime pellets, introducing a deduction of the lime pellets over a deduction device while exceeding the predetermined limit of the measuring value, feeding the quantity of the granular solids, which is calculated over a conversion factor in connection to it, to the reactor over the tube connection provided for it, determining the relevant measuring value by a first pressure measurement in the height of the fluidized bed in the reactor, by a second pressure measurement in the height of the pellet removal openings and by determining the differential pressure, and introducing and terminating the deduction of the pellets in dependent of the measured differential pressure. The water supply quantity is reduced before the pellet removal, where one of the pellet removal openings is opened for few second in a rotational basis until the pellet removal is terminated by the controller. The water supply quantity is again increased to the original value after carrying out the removal, where the discharge lines are shortly rinsed with the water. The granular solid is sand or crushed lime. The process water is brought for mixing the lime milk with hydrochloric acid to a pH value of 3-4, where the acidic water is decarbonized in a tower by aeration and the pre-treated water is fed to a mixing tank for lime milk production. An independent claim is included for a device for automatically operating a reactor for softening the water.
