The method involves detecting objects by an environment control device (13) of a motor car (12). An intervention into an electronic power steering system of the car is made when a collision hazard exists during a lane change with the objects detected on an objective lane, where the intervention into the steering system is shortly corrected. Wheel steering angles preset by a rider (14) of the car are influenced by a steering wheel angle (dS) through an overlay unit (8) of the steering system so as to prevent the lane change of the car of a current lane traveled by the car to the objective lane. An independent claim is also included for an electronic regulating and control unit of a motor vehicle for performing a lane- changing assistance method.
