The method involves detecting the vehicle environment and producing an electronic image. The electronic image is applied for recognition of a lane (1a,1b) or a track (1,2) and objects (B) in the vehicle environment. The dynamic motion quantities of the motor vehicle (A) are detected. The position of the motor vehicle is determined corresponding to the data of the electronic image of the vehicle environment and dynamic motion quantities of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a driver assistance system for automatic supporting of a driver of a motor vehicle.
