Producing chlorine dioxide comprises reacting chlorite with an acid in a reaction region (4a) and transferring the formed, gaseous chlorine dioxide in a separate container (7). An independent claim is included for a device for producing the chlorine dioxide comprising at least a first container (4) for the conversion of chlorite with acid, where the first container comprises a reaction region, in which the chlorite is reacted with acid, and an area (4b) for receiving gaseous chlorine dioxide, where the device has an unit (11) for transferring the formed, gaseous chlorine dioxide in a second container from which chlorine dioxide is removable.
