The hand-operated chain hoist has a chain wheel (6), which is arranged between two side shields (1A) and is entangled by a load chain (10) of the chain hoist in a form fit manner. The load strand (11) of the load chain is led through an opening (21) facing away from an abutment element, and a return strand is led through another opening (22) from a housing (1). The latter opening is formed as a cross-shaped passage in an insert (25), which is arranged between the side shields. The insert is made of plastic.
