The method involves contactlessly determining a switching position of a switching device (3) by an interface (4) of a functional module (2), and sending the determined switching position to an evaluation unit (1). A stored control signal is compared with the determined switching position. A safety-related error signal is outputted as error response by the evaluation unit when the switching position of the control signal does not match with the determined switching position such that an actuator (7) e.g. motor, attached to the switching device is transferred to a safety-related state. An independent claim is also included for a safety system for safety-related monitoring of a switching position of a switching device comprising a functional module mechanically connected with the switching device.
