An operating machine for machining elements (100, 100a) made of wood or similar material comprises operating means (2) that is movable and arranged for performing machinings on said elements (100, 100a), portal means (3) for slidingly supporting said operating means (2), supporting means (4) for sustaining the elements (100, 100a) at least during said machinings, and transferring means (6) that is movable and arranged for positioning the elements (100, 100a) on and/or removing the elements (100, 100a) from said supporting means (4), said transferring means (6) being slidingly connected to said portal means (3). A method for loading elements (100, 100a) in said machine (1) comprises: positioning an element (100, 100a) on movement means (5); driving the movement means (5) for moving in a movement direction (E) the element (100, 100a) to abut on first abutting means (27) ; moving the element (100, 100a) along a first linear movement direction (X) in a removing position (P), wherein the element (100, 100a) abuts on transferring means (6); storing the removal position (P) in controlling means; locking the element (100, 100a) with the transferring means (6) in the removing position (P); transferring and depositing the element (100, 100a) on supporting means (4) in a releasing position (R).
