The method involves determining fluid temperature by a temperature sensor (4) e.g. temperature-dependent resistor (5) or thermocouple element, in a region of a drive unit. Sensor temperature of the temperature sensor is measured, and a determination is made whether the fluid temperature is greater than the sensor temperature of fluid mass by a temperature prediction model (6). Control and/or regulation of the drive unit are performed based on the fluid temperature. An operational parameter is determined from a temperature value of the fluid temperature. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for operating a drive unit comprising a control device assigned to the drive unit (2) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for executing a drive unit operating method (3) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for executing a drive unit operating method.
