The synthesis of di-4-hydroxy-3-(tetramethylbutyl)phenyl)-sulphide and t-nonyl analogue effective antioxidants for lubricating oils

The reaction of 2-t-octylphenol (2-(1,1,1,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenol) or 2-t-nonylphenol with sulphur dichloride predominantly affords 4,4'-thiobisphenols. Thus di[4-hydroxy-3-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenyl]-sulfide and di[4-hydroxy-3-t-nonylphenyl]-sulfide are produced respectively. These compounds have superior antioxidant properties compared with the 2,2'-thiobisphenol analogues traditionally utilised as antioxidant additives in lubricating oils.
