PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of promoting subsistence and/or proliferation of neural stem cells; a pharmaceutical composition containing the neural stem cells produced by the method; and a method of assaying and method of screening a factor capable of promoting the subsistence and/or proliferation of neural stem cells.SOLUTION: Excess expression of galectin-1 is effected in neural stem cells, or neural stem cells are cultured in a culture solution containing galectin-1. High-order functions disordered by intracerebral ischemia can be ameliorated by the pharmaceutical composition comprising the thus produced neural stem cells wherein excess expression of galectin-1 is effected and the pharmaceutical composition comprising galectin-1 ameliorate. There is further provided an assaying method comprising seeding of neural stem cells at a clonal concentration and determination of whether or not the seeded neural stem cells can proliferate in an assay culture medium as an assay subject thereby identifying whether or not this factor promotes the subsistence and/or proliferation of neural stem cells. The factor capable of promoting the subsistence and/or proliferation of neural stem cells is screened by using the assaying method.
