PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To isolate and identify a new trehalose transporter gene, and to provide a method for introducing trehalose in a cell by utilizing the gene.SOLUTION: A plurality of EST (expression sequence tag) clones annotated by a sugar transporter are identified from Polypedilum vanderplanki EST database. A cDNA (PvTRET1) having about a 2.3 kb full length is isolated from Polypedilum vanderplanki by using an RACE (rapid amplification of cDNA ends) method, based on base sequence data of a cluster constituted of the EST clone. The cDNA has conserved domain of a sugar transporter. Orthologues of PvTRET1 (Trehalose transporter of P. vanderplanki) are widely conserved in insects and all of the orthologues had facilitated diffusion type trehalose transportation activity. The activity imparts trehalose transportation activity also to any organisms.
