PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which carbon fibers with reduced particulate carbon that is an impurity are produced in high yield by a mass productive combustion method. PSOLUTION: A carbon source (B) such as benzene is fed to the outside of a flame which is formed by burning a fuel (A) so as to provide ≤5 vol.% moisture content in a combustion gas such as carbon monoxide in a reducing atmosphere and reacted in the presence of a catalyst (C) such as ferrocene and a sulfur compound such as thiophene in an atmosphere at a temperature within the range of 400-1,500°C to provide the carbon fibers. The resultant carbon fibers, together with the combustion gas, are discharged to the outside of a reaction tube and recovered with a solid-gas separator. PCOPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
