PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery capable of improving trade-off relationships and exhibiting good performance in paste characteristics, initial efficiency, cycle characteristics, low temperature output, and the like.SOLUTION: A multilayer-structured carbon material satisfying the following (a) and (b) is used for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery negative electrode. (a) (Porosity calculated from DBP oil absorption)/(porosity calculated from tapping density) is less than 1.01. (b) Surface oxygen content (O/C) determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is 1.5 atomic% or greater.
