PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adequately and rapidly approximate a planar shape of a building to a rectangle. PSOLUTION: The rectangle approximation system is provided with a hard disk 3 for storing an electronic map having contour data presenting a planar view contour of the building, a contour data extracting part 13 for extracting the contour data, an end point extracting part 14 for extracting an eastern-most end point, western-most end point, southern-most end point, and northernmost end point of the building corresponding to the contour data from the contour data, a shape identifying part 15 for identifying whether a square formed of the four end points extracted by the end point extracting part 14 is a rectangle or not, and a rectangle forming part 16 for forming the rectangle approximating the square when it is identified that the square is not the rectangle.
