Infiltration or seepage from surface water bodies like ponds is a process by which a part of the water stored in the pond enters the soil. Assessment of this infiltration from the surface water bodies is done to estimate the loss from the pond through the seepage or contribution to ground water resources. The existing methods for assessing seepage/infiltration from the ponds are all indirect methods and involve many assumptions. The innovation "Pond Infiltrometer" is a simple and cost effective device, which is installed within the pond itself. The device comprises an evaporation chamber, which is placed within the water body with the help of a stand. Since the device is installed within the pond, unlike the existing methods, it perfectly represents the in situ conditions. It provides direct and realistic measurement of seepage from the pond.
