The invention relates to a method for extending a building, a bearing element, a modular structural unit and a building with such a unit. The method for extending the habitable space of a building with vertical walls and a facade comprises the following steps, to be performed in suitable sequence, of: a) providing a prefabricated modular structural unit (34) with two substantially vertical walls (48, 50) which are situated a distance from each other corresponding to a whole multiple of a pitch distance between vertical walls of the building and which each comprise a wall edge situated in a common boundary surface of the unit; b) removing a facade part such that free wall edges resu c) arranging bearing elements in the zone of the free wall edges for the purpose of bearing the unit; d) arranging on the unit coupling elements which can be coupled to the bearing elements; e) positioning the unit such that the wall edges of the unit are brought into the zone of the free wall edges of the building; and f) coupling the coupling elements to the bearing elements.
