A surgical access apparatus (1) comprising: a housing (10); an access member (12) extending from the housing (10) and defining a longitudinal axis (k), the access member (12) having a longitudinal passageway for passage of an object and defining trailing and leading ends; and a mechanism of elongated seal (100) mounted relative to the housing (10), the drive mechanism including elongated seal (100): a rear hub (147, 247, 347) and a leading hub (141, 241, 341) longitudinally separate rear hub (147, 247, 347), the rear hub (147, 247, 347) and the leading hub (141, 241, 341) adapted for relative rotational movement about the longitudinal axis (k); a plurality of spokes (145, 245, 345) extending between and connected to the trailing hub (147, 247, 347) and the leading hub (141, 241, 341) defining the radii (145, 245, 345) a first minimum internal dimension in a first condition thereof in the absence of an object (99) and defining a second minimum internal dimension in a second condition thereof upon insertion of the object (99) and relative rotation of the rear hub (147, 247, 347) and the leading hub (141, 241, 341), the second minimum internal dimension greater than the minimum internal dimension primea; and an elongated sealing member (110) disposed with the radii (145, 245, 345) and adapted to establish a sealing relationship around the object (99).
