A method for varying a power level of a signal provided to a power amplifier (232) of a transmitter (200) of a wireless communication device, comprising: determining a frequency to transmit said signal from an antenna; determine a minimum and maximum frequency of a frequency band in which the wireless communication device must operate; determine an emission mask that includes a first maximum power level at which the antenna transmits a signal at the minimum frequency and a second maximum power level at which the antenna transmits a signal at the maximum frequency; and reducing said power level of said signal provided to said signal amplifier (232) coupled to the antenna depending on the proximity of the signal frequency to at least one of the minimum or maximum frequencies.
