The present invention pertains to mutant alleles of the genes encoding thelarge subunit of ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase in plants. When present inmaize plants, these mutants alleles confer enhanced germinationcharacteristics but without any diminishment of food quality or flavor ascompared to plants that express the sh2-R genes. The subject invention alsoconcerns methods for transforming plants with the mutant alleles. The subjectinvention also concerns plants that have the mutant alleles of the inventionincorporated in their genome.
