A patient transfer device (10) includes an inflatable mattress (12) and a liner (26) releasably attached to the inflatable mattress. The inflatable mattress (12) includes a top sheet (14) having opposite side edges (18) and a bottom sheet (16) defining a plurality of holes to create a cushion (20) of escaping air beneath the mattress. The cushion (20) of air facilitates sliding of the mattress (12) with respect to an underlying support surface. The liner (26) includes an intermediate portion (28) adapted to cover the top sheet (14) of the mattress (12) and opposite side portions (30) extending beyond the side edges (18) of the top sheet.
