A near-infrared-ray absorbing material of the disclosure containing a cyanine compound represented by general formula (I) exhibits a sharp light absorption in the wavelength range between 800 and 1000 nm and has excellent light resistance. In formula (I), R¹ to R⁴, Y¹, and Y² represent a hydrogen atom, a group represented by formula (II) or (II'), etc.; An^q- represents a q-valent anion; at least either R¹ is a group represented by formula (II) or (II') or An^q- is an ion represented by formula (III); R¹¹ to R¹³ represent a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group, etc.; and Z¹ and Z² represent a C_1-10 alkyl group, etc. In formula (II'), the bond between G' and T' is a double bond or a conjugated double bond; G' represents a carbon atom; T' represents a carbon atom or a nitrogen atom; the ring containing G' and T' represents a 6-membered ring, etc.; w' represents 0 to 4; and R^01' represents a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group, etc. In formula (III), R⁵ and R⁶ represent a halogen-substituted C_1-8 alkyl group.
