The method involves providing a temporary control device (30) with a control part (32) and an operation part (36). A signal-conducting connection is formed between the control and operation parts. A voltage source i.e. site electricity distributor (54), a drive device (16) and a brake device (22) are attached to the control part. Travel of a lift car (12) is controlled by the operation part for implementation of modernization and assembly works in a lift shaft (14). An existing control device is repaired or a new control device is installed. The temporary control device is removed. An independent claim is also included for a control device for temporary controlling a lift system.
