The method involves determining a vehicle environment and feeding a jolt in transverse direction of the vehicle in the travel direction by an actively controlled steering during detection of an imminent lane departure or an imminent obstacle collision. The jolt is fed in opposite direction towards direction triggering lane departure recognition or in direction of an unobstructed drivable traffic lane.
