The gear rack comprises a gearing that extends over a part of its length and is partially hardened such that a near-surface hardened zone (8) is formed in the gearing. The hardened zone has a less ductile structural state than an unhardened surface. The gearing comprises a gearing head (6), and gearing flanks (7) having teeth (5) and a tooth base located mutually between two adjacent teeth. The hardened zone is partially formed in the region of the gearing head, the gearing flanks and/or the tooth base. The gear rack comprises a gearing that extends over a part of its length and is partially hardened such that a near-surface hardened zone (8) is formed in the gearing. The hardened zone has a less ductile structural state than an unhardened surface. The gearing comprises a gearing head (6), and gearing flanks (7) having teeth (5) and a tooth base located mutually between two adjacent teeth. A core region of the respective tooth enclosed by the tooth head and/or the two tooth flanks is unhardened. The hardened zone runs along an outer contour (10) of the gearing. The gearings are arranged at opposite ends. An independent claim is included for a method for hardening an elongated gearing.
