The method involves exciting a servo motor (30) with a high frequency signal, which produces a high frequency motor torque and is on the basis of the resultant torsion moment. A control unit (26) is driven by the servo motor superimposing the overlay torque. The blocking of a power steering system (10) is detected, avoided and loosened. The motor torque is determined according to a limiting curve, while the signal is selected from a frequency range of 10 to 25 hertz.
