The method involves representing the visual evidence of a window pane of the motor vehicle (1) in a contact-analog manner in a display unit, and controlling the speed or the distance to a target vehicle (2) traveling ahead in a detection area by an adaptive speed control unit. The target vehicle is temporarily visually highlighted in the display unit. The target vehicle is highlighted only for the speed control unit in the critical situations in the display unit. The critical driving situation is detected or determined, if the preceding target vehicle prospectively leaves the detection area. An independent claim is included for a device for operating a motor vehicle.
