The picking system has multiple tray conveyors (3,4,5) that are provided for target container (7) and source container (6). The system has an upper and an lower horizontal buffer (8,9) of the tray conveyor and a changing unit (10) is provided for movement of the container between the upper and the lower horizontal buffer. The changing unit has a swivel arm for movement of a swiveling table between an upper position and a lower position and the inclination of the swiveling table. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a picking system with a picking area for manual picking of articles from source containers in target container.
