The device has a camera integrated into the device. The device recognizes a pair of eyes of a person i.e. driver, of a motor car to be monitored based on data output from the camera. The device monitors and evaluates eyelid closing and an iris activity of the recognized eye pair to determine vigilance of the monitored person. The device outputs a warning to the person with the vigilance. A retainer is mounted at a windscreen of the car. The device enables recognition of the state of vigilance in a background, so that the device performs other assistance functions. An independent claim is also included for a method for recognition of vigilance of a person of a motor car.
