The synchronizer (36) has a torque-proof synchronization ring (24) connected with a drive pinion (18). The drive pinion and the ring are moved relative to each other in an axial direction such that the ring is in contact with an initiator wheel (22) i.e. flywheel, of a starter (10) before the drive pinion during movement of the drive pinion from a disengaged state to a positioned state. The ring comprises a friction surface (28) such that the ring is provided in slippage-afflicted frictional contact with the wheel. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a starter comprising an initiator wheel (2) a method for starting a combustion engine of a motor car.
