The method involves detecting a trigger event to activate a heating element (124) before activating an internal combustion engine (110). The heating element is activated for heating a ceramic sensor element (122) by the heating element at the pre-heating. The ceramic sensor element is provided for detecting parameter of an exhaust gas in the internal combustion engine. The ceramic sensor element is provided as a lambda sensor, nitrogen oxide sensor or a hydrocarbon sensor. The heating element is heated to a predetermined temperature that is above a limit function of the ceramic sensor element.
