The method involves depositing nanoparticles e.g. metal and polymeric nanoparticles, on dry hydrogel i.e. polyacrylamide gel, that is covalently bound to a substrate i.e. glass substrate (1) and structured according to a pattern, where the substrate is chosen from silicon and metal oxide. The nanoparticles are self-assembled according to the pattern. Functionalization of the substrate is performed by silanisation. Structured hydrogel bound covalently to a surface of the substrate is prepared. An aqueous monomer solution (2) forming hydrogel is deposited at the surface of substrate.
