PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode active material composed of a metal alloy material capable of achieving a high battery capacity and high productivity.SOLUTION: The negative electrode active material is obtained by preparing a metallic salt solution by dissolving and mixing at least a tin salt and a cobalt salt in a first solvent; preparing a reducing agent containing boron (B), or a reducing agent solution obtained by dissolving a reducing agent containing boron (B) in a second solvent; precipitating metal alloy particles containing at least tin (Sn), cobalt (Co), and boron (B) as constituent elements by mixing the reducing agent or the reducing agent solution with the metallic salt solution and causing reduction reactions of tin ions derived from the tin salt and cobalt ions derived from the cobalt salt dissolved in the metallic salt solution; cleaning the metal alloy particles precipitated by the reduction reactions; removing the first and second solvents remaining in the metal alloy particles in a vacuum or an inert gas atmosphere; and compositing the metal alloy particles and carbon (C) by mechanochemical treatment.
