PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ortho-para hydrogen (deuterim) separation method which produces hydrogen with an increased ortho hydrogen ratio from a hydrogen gas consisting of ortho hydrogen and para hydrogen. PSOLUTION: The ortho-para hydrogen (deuterim) separation method has a first step of cooling a separation cell 16 which is capable of controlling the temperature to a temperature capable of adsorbing hydrogen gas by a mechanical refrigerator 10, a second step of introducing hydrogen gas consisting of ortho hydrogen and para hydrogen to the separation cell 16 and for adsorbing with an adsorbing part 18 of the separation cell 16, a third step of desorbing hydrogen gas from the adsorbing part 18 by raising the temperature of the separation cell 16 from the temperature capable of adsorbing hydrogen gas, and a fourth step of collecting hydrogen gas, wherein the third step comprises a step of discharging hydrogen gas having an increased ratio of para hydrogen at a temperature range for separation of para hydrogen and a step of discharging hydrogen gas having an increased ratio of ortho hydrogen at a temperature range for separation of ortho hydrogen higher than the temperature range for separation of para hydrogen.
