PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an early detection method of an abnormal paper sheet in a paper sheet identification device, solving a problem caused by feeding the abnormal paper sheet such as a perforated bill to the inside. PSOLUTION: In a bill identification device 1, while feeding a bill P inserted from a bill insertion port 8 to a feeding position, an identification part 43 of a control part 40 detects whether the bill P is a perforated bill P1, based on detection signals of transmission type photo sensors 11 to 14 arranged in a position on the way to a bill transfer path 10. When the bill P is detected as a perforated bill P1, a transfer control part 41 immediately stops feeding the perforated bill P1, sends out the perforated bill P1 to the bill insertion port 8, and returns the bill to an inserting person from the port. It prevents thereby occurrence of a paper jam state due to catching the hole 60 of the bill by a detection piece, a shutter piece, and the like when the perforated bill P1 is fed into the inside.
