A method for treating wastewater from an oil refinery, mainly containing hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, as well as acid waste gases, mainly containing hydrogen sulfide, while this method includes the following steps: a) distillation in a stripping column (100) of said wastewater ( 1) at a pressure ranging from 8 to 20 bar (8 to 20 atm) g to obtain a gaseous overhead stream (2) substantially containing hydrogen sulfide and water, and a liquid bottom stream (4) substantially containing aqueous ammonia; b) stripping in a second stripper (110) stream (4) at 1-3 bar (at 1-3 atm) g to obtain a gaseous overhead stream (5-11) of ammonia, substantially pure on a dry basis, and a liquid bottom stream (6) containing less than 1 ppm hydrogen sulfide and less than 5 ppm ammonia, while the specified aqueous composition is required to be disposed of in the sewer; c) oxidizing with an oxidant deficiency to nitrogen and water of the ammonia contained in stream (11) in a thermal oxidation apparatus (170) to obtain an output stream (12) containing 50-150 ppm by volume ammonia and 80-200 ppm by volume nitrogen oxides; d) thermal oxidation of stream (12) in the thermal oxidation apparatus (160).
