A method for protecting against the failure of a border router between two domains in a computer network, a first domain of the two domains including a next-hop router and the second domain of the two domains itrcluding one or more next-hop routers (NNHOPs), the method characterized in: configuring the next-hc router in the first domain to protect the border router (protecting router); learning address prefixt.5 of destinations reachable fiom the one or more NNHOPs, the learning performed by the proteczing router located in the first domain; calculating, using a prcbcessor of the protecting router located in the first domain, a backup tunnel to each NNHOP that excludes the border router; associating each backup tunnel with one or more learned address prefixes; and in response to failure of the border router, rerouting traffic directed to the one or more learned address prefixes, via one or more network interfaces of the protecting router located in the first domain, onto an appropriate backup tunnel to a corresponding NNHOP.
