The method for the processing of a flat product (1) comprising a number of individual flat pieces, especially letters, entails conveying the pieces in a row and with one edge lying against a conveyor belt. The individual pieces lie one upon the other in an overlapping fashion and the whole product by a flat side is then guided against a braking device (6), whereby an individual piece lying against the braking device is braked in relation to the transporting speed of the conveyor belt. The product is then gripped on the other flat side by especially a side belt (12). An independent claim is included for a device for the processing of a flat product, especially letters.
