The band saw (10) has a machine frame (12) on which a table (13) for receiving a workpiece (11) is mounted. A saw frame (16) is pivoted on the machine frame about horizontal axis (17). A band portion (20) used as an endless loop is provided on the saw frame, while stretching a portion of the band portion perpendicular to the horizontal axis. A tape drive unit (28) is provided for driving the band portion with the pivot drive unit (31) for pivoting the saw frame on the table. The pivot drive unit is a regulated electric drive unit. An independent claim is included for method for creation of advancing movement of band portion of band saw.
